Nanocarriers comprising a silica body having a surface and defining a number of pores suitable for receiving the molecules therein are described. The nanocarrier also includes a lipid bilayer that coats the surface, and a cargo capture agent in the phospholipid bilayer. The phospholipid bilayer tightly seals the majority of the pores.
