A SAFETY SYRINGE CAPABLE OF BEING DISPOSED IN EXTENDED AND DEPRESSED POSITIONS INCLUDING A BARREL (6) HAVING A FIRST END (1) AND A SECOND END (2), A PLUNGER (10), COMPRISING A PLUNGER BODY AND A PLUNGER HEAD (13), THE PLUNGER HEAD BEING ADAPTED TO SLIDABLY CONTACT THE INTERIOR SURFACE OF THE BARREL IN A FLUID TIGHT MANNER AS THE PLUNGER MOVES FROM AN EXTENDED POSITION AT THE SECOND END OF THE BARREL, TO A DEPRESSED POSITION TOWARDS THE FIRST END OF THE BARREL, AND A NEEDLE HOLDER (20), THE HOLDER AND THE INTERIOR SURFACE OF THE FIRST END OF THE BARREL BEING PROVIDED WITH COMPLEMENTARY ENGAGING MEMBERS ADAPTED TO LOCK THE NEEDLE HOLDER TO THE BARREL IN A FLUID TIGHT MANNER AND IN A MANNER WHICH WILL ALLOW THE HOLDER TO BE SELECTIVELY UNLOCKED FROM THE BARREL. THE HOLDER (20) AND THE PLUNGER (10) ARE PROVIDED WITH COOPERATING MEMBERS, ADAPTED TO INTERCONNECT THE PLUNGER WITH THE NEEDLE HOLDER AND WHEREIN THE PLUNGER IS CONFIGURED TO BE CAPABLE OF UNLOCKING THE NEEDLE HOLDER FROM THE BARREL IN SUCH A WAY THAT DURING CONTINUED DEPRESSION OF THE PLUNGER INTO THE BARREL (6) BEYOND A ZERO POSITION, INTERCONNECTION OF THE PLUNGER HEAD WITH THE HOLDER AND UNLOCKING OF THE HOLDER FROM THE BARREL BOTH TAKE PLACE ENABLING THE NEEDLE HOLDER TO BE RETRACTED BACK INTO THE BARREL WHEN THE PLUNGER IS MOVED FROM THE DEPRESSED POSITION TO THE EXTENDED POSITION. THE ACTIONS OF CONTINUED DEPRESSION AND RETRACTION ARE DONE AFTER REMOVAL OF THE SYRINGE FROM THE PATIENT’S BODY. FIGURE 1
