The invention relates to the isolation of mesenchymal progenitor cells (MPCs),and the use ofMPCs in promoting wound healing. A graft containing a scaffold that includes aporousmatrix in which are positioned MPCs has the capacity to substantially improvewoundhealing, including wounds resulting from injury to nerve, bone and vasculartissue. MPCs canbe harvested from debrided muscle tissue following orthopaedic trauma. Thetraumatizedmuscle-derived progenitor cells are a readily available autologous cell sourcethat can beutilized to effect or improve wound healing in a variety of therapeuticsettings and vehicles.
