The present invention relates to topical compositions containing a dispersionof composite particles. Each of suchcomposite particles contains one or more core particles encapsulated orentrapped in a polymeric shell. At least some of the coreparticles are formed of a material capable of causing generation of reactiveoxygen species (ROS). Each of the composite particlesfurther contains: (1) a first antioxidant co-encapsulated or co-entrapped withthe core particles inside the polymeric shell forquenching or scavenging ROS generated in the vicinity of the core particles,and (2) a second antioxidant coated over the polymericshell for preventing or reducing oxidative damage to the skin, such as lipidperoxidation. The particle dispersion of thepresent invention therefore can be readily formulated into topical sunscreencompositions with organic sunscreen agents susceptibleto oxidative decomposition or degradation to provide improved protectionagainst skin damage caused by exposure to UVlight.
