To provide a hair dye composition which contains a dissociative azo dye stable to an alkali agent and an oxidant not to cause decomposition ON dyeing the hair, has high dyeability, can firmly impart a bright color to the hair, has excellent fastness to light, washing, perspiration, friction and HEAT, and reduces discoloration and fading with time and a method of dyeing the hair with the use of this hair dye composition.
