A drive connection 26 for an animal sheering hand piece 10 comprises a distal threaded portion 54 and proximal tapered drive face 56 provided on the spindle 34 of a drive motor (32, fig. 2a), and complementary tapered distal drive face 72 and threaded proximal portion 70 provided on an inner shaft member 23 of the drive shaft 12. A sleeve 28 surrounds the drive shaft and connects to a connection feature 38 of the drive motor. The sleeve includes a support surface comprising the upper surface 79 of a spring 78, and the inner shaft member includes an abutment surface 77. In use, the sleeve receives the drive spindle and inner drive shaft member and activation of the spindle draws the threaded portions towards one another until the drive faces 56, 72 are in driving engagement (see fig. 4). Deactivation of the spindle causes separation of the drive faces, and the inner shaft member moves axially with the abutment surface 77 coming to rest on the support surface 79 of the sleeve. A shearing hand piece drive motor having a drive spindle, and a shearing hand piece drive shaft having an inner drive shaft member, are also claimed.
