A method for the production of a solution of peracetic acid (PAA) containing at most 23 wt % PAA according to which acetic anhydride optionally containing acetic acid (AA) is added in a controlled manner to a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide, wherein the diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2 ) has a concentration and is used in an amount such that it if the amount of water required to hydrate all of the added acetic anhydride is subtracted therefrom, it still contains in weight, at least 50% (preferably 54%) of water based on the total amount of water and hydrogen peroxide.
