Disclosed is an ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus and method for controlling the same, which increases user convenience and shortens time required for the user to re-adjust a region of interest (ROI) by automatically creating an ROI to fit a changed object image if the user makes a mode change. The ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus includes a probe for irradiating an ultrasound signal to an object and receiving an echo ultrasound signal from the object an image generator for creating an image in a first mode based on the echo ultrasound signal received by the probe and creating an image in a second mode related to the first mode an image measurer for measuring the object image on the image in the first mode a region of interest (ROI) generator for automatically creating an ROI in the second mode based on the measured object image as the first mode is changed to the second mode and a display for displaying the image in the first mode, and displaying the image in the second mode with the created ROI as the mode change is made.
