A plate for securing two bone segments in a tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) procedure, the plate comprising a body 5 having an elongate distal portion 7, a proximal portion 8 extending laterally and a plurality of fixation apertures F1-F5. In one arrangement at least two of the apertures are further adapted to receive or are provided with - a removable plug 22, 23, 24 which extends proud of the bone-facing surface. The plug 22, 23, 24 preventing the bone plate from being compressed against the bone surface in use. In an alternative arrangement the body 5 is shaped such that a first edge of both the distal 7 and proximal 9 portions together form a linear edge which extends along the length of the body and is generally parallel to the longitudinal axis. One of the apertures C1 may further have a chamfered ramming surface 26 configured such that upon insertion of the fixing means the bone fragments are urged together. A method of carrying out a TPLO procedure using a plate of the sort taught above is also disclosed.
