The gel based hair coloring serum composition comprises a fluid medium, a thickening agent, a humectant, a chelating agent, an antioxidant, a coloring agent, a coupler, a fragrance, a conditioning agent, and a pH adjusting agent, in a pre-determined proportion with each other. The present disclosure further relates to a process for preparing the gel based hair coloring serum composition. The gel based hair coloring serum composition of the present disclosure is easy to apply on hair, is peroxide and ammonia free, and hence is safe for use. Further, the gel based hair coloring serum composition is capable of rapid development of the color on hair and retains the color even after repeated washing. 29
