The embodiments disclosed herein relate to a suction catheter that includes a catheter body that may have a first end and a second end and a suction lumen that extends through the catheter body. The suction lumen may have a suction opening located in the distal portion of the suction catheter. The catheter may have an auxiliary jet element extending through the wall of the aspiration lumen. The auxiliary jet element may have an auxiliary jet channel. The auxiliary jet element is applicable to draw blood from a location external to the catheter body adjacent to the auxiliary jet element through the auxiliary jet element and into the suction lumen when suction is applied to the suction lumen. And may be configured to dislodge thrombus or obstructions in the suction lumen.
