An object of the present invention is to find a newpharmaceutical application of a prostaglandin F2.alpha.derivative. It was found that the prostaglandin F2.alpha.derivative inhibits glutamate-induced retinal neuronalcell death in a concentration-dependent manner in ratfetal retinal neuronal cells, in other words, theprostaglandin F2.alpha. derivative acts directly on the retinalneuronal cells and exhibits a protective effect.Accordingly, the prostaglandin F2.alpha. derivative is usefulfor the prevention or treatment of an eye diseaseassociated with retinal neuronal cell damage.
