PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric vehicle that is prevented from moving when a user tries to pick up goods or the like with one hand while gripping a handle with the other hand and putting his/her weight on the electric vehicle, and to provide a method of controlling the electric vehicle.SOLUTION: An electric vehicle 10 includes: wheels 13 provided on a frame 11； a brake unit 20 for braking the wheels 13； a pair of handles 14 to be individually operated by a user； and operation sensing means 24 for sensing whether individual ones of the handles 14 are operated by the user. A control unit 16 controls the brake unit 20 on the basis of a signal from the operation sensing means 24.
