An externally programmable shunt valve assembly including a motor operable in response to an externally applied magnetic field and having a rotor configured to increase or decrease the working pressure of the shunt valve assembly. The motor may further include a position sensing mechanism that allows an external magnet sensor to be used to determine the position of the rotor and the associated valve pressure setting. In a particular example, the motor further includes a mechanical brake that is magnetically operable between a locked position and an unlocked position and prevents rotation of the rotor in the locked position.
