PURPOSE: A radio frequency (RF) device and a method for controlling the same are provided to prevent from being damaged due to high voltages, which is generated under a non-operating state, by mounting a handpiece on a main body and generating high voltages only in case of operation after confirming whether the handpiece is mounted on a main body connector. CONSTITUTION: An RF device comprises a handpiece (5) and a main body equipment unit (8). The handpiece is interlinked with an RF electrode plate (2) arranged in an operating part (1). A tip (3) is formed on one side of the main body of the handpiece. The tip generates RF signals to the operating part. An operator operates the operating part by gripping the main body of the handpiece. A connection connector (4) is arranged on the end part of the main body. The main body equipment unit controls the entire function of an RF unit (7) for the handpiece by transmitting or blocking RF signals based on high voltages with respect to the handpiece according to the connection of the connection connector and a main body connector (6). A method for controlling an RF device comprises the steps: for a main control module to detect whether a connection connector of a handpiece is insertion-combined with a main body connector; for the main control module to relay the connection connector and the main body connector when the connection connector is normally combined with the main body connector, generate RF signals based on high voltages, and normally transmit the RF signals to the handpiece; and for the main control module to block the relay of the connection connector and the main body connector when the connection connector is abnormally combined with the main body connector and block the introduction of high voltages into an internal circuit.
