Provides a method of treatment useful in the induction or maintenance of anesthesia in a subject. The method comprises administering a compound disclosed herein to a subject in need of anesthesia. Also provided are novel compounds having an anesthetic effect, pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compounds, and packaged pharmaceuticals. Computer modeling of said compounds shows favorable interaction with GABA receptor type A. In addition, the compound exhibits a reversible anesthetic effect in a animal model with a dose response curve similar to that of known general anesthetics.
