A barrier assembly 1 for a bed comprises one or more support rails 2 extendable laterally from a stowed position to a deployed position. A pivot mechanism, optionally comprising a barrier support 4, a sleeve 5 and a rotatable rod, is provided at a distal end of the rails 2, and one or more barriers 7 are coupled to the rod for movement between substantially horizontal and vertical planes. When horizontal, the struts 7 are themselves movable in the plane of the supports 2 between extended and retracted positions. One or more of the barriers 7 may have a stop, provided for example by a stepped profile, for preventing removal from the support 2. The assembly 1 may feature a resilient top bar 12 with a rib providing a snap fit with the support 4. Also disclosed is a bed incorporating one or more of the barrier assemblies 1.
