Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (I) is used to prevent or treat portal hypertension； to prevent or treat hemorrhagic complications of portal hypertension, hepatorenal syndrome, hepatopulmonary syndrome, hepatic encephalopathy, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and ascites； to prevent or treat diseases that can be ameliorated or prevented by lowering portal vein pressure and/or increasing portal vein blood flow； for modulating the metabolism of a substance, where such modulation comprises increasing portal vein blood flow and thus increasing hepatic blood flow. An independent claim is also included for a combination medication for preventing or treating portal hypertension and/or disease states or risks associated with portal hypertension, comprising a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (II) and another agent active against portal hypertension.
