Disclosed are methods for detecting demineralization of a surface of a tooth, comprising a) contacting the tooth of a subject with an orally acceptable, binding composition comprising a binding agent that binds to a demineralized surface of the tooth； b) removing unbound binding compound； c) contacting the tooth with an orally acceptable, detector composition comprising a probe compound that reacts with the binding agent to form a visually detectable reaction product； and d) detecting formation of the reaction product as an indication of the presence or extent of surface demineralization of the tooth. Systems, kits, and compositions for practicing the methods are also provided.L'invention concerne des procédés pour détecter la déminéralisation d'une surface d'une dent, consistant à a) mettre en contact la dent d'un sujet avec une composition de liaison acceptable par voie orale comprenant un agent de liaison qui se lie à une surface déminéralisée de la dent ； b) enlever le composé de liaison non lié ； c) mettre en contact la dent avec une composition de détection acceptable par voie orale, comprenant un composé sonde qui réagit avec l'agent de liaison pour former un produit de réaction visuellement détectable ； et d) détecter la formation du produit de réaction comme indication de la présence ou de l'étendue de la déminéralisation de surface de la dent.
