A detection system and a method thereof use an implantable magnetic marker in a body which includes at least one large Barkhousen jump (LBJ) material. The marker is placed to mark areas of tissue inside the body for subsequent surgery. To detect and localize the marker, a magnetic detecting system includes a portable probe for exciting the marker below a switching field for bistable switching of markers which cause harmonic responses generated in a sub-bistable mode.
