PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planting base for greening a building, which uses a water-absorbing expandable material, such as a water-absorbing polymer, excellent in water absorbability and water retainability to well maintain water applied to plants, can prevent adverse effects caused by the expansion of the water-absorbing expandable material on the absorption of water to well grow the plants, and is excellent in applicability.
SOLUTION: This planting base 1 is characterized by having a pair of water-permeable sheet members 2, 2 constituting front and back surfaces, integrally nipping a water-conducting member 3 for transferring water, a water-absorbing expandable member 4 for absorbing water and expanding, and a shape-retaining member 5 in which expansion-absorbing spaces S for receiving the expansion portions of the water-absorbing expandable member 4 are formed, in a laminated state, between the water-permeable sheet members 2, 2, and loading a water-permeable planting mat on the front surface side or directly planting plants in the front surface side to take roots in the water-conducting member 3.
