PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide formulations of compounds having antiviral activities to reduce the risk of HIV transmission and/or infection during sexual acts, in particular, formulations of compounds having anti-HIV properties.SOLUTION: The formulations suitable for topical application of nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), preferably [2-(6-amino-purin-9-yl)-1-methyl-ethoxymethyl]-phosphonic acid (tenofovir, PMPA) having a structure represented by formula, or physiologically functional derivatives thereof are provided.
