In one aspect, near field communication is used to provide power and read a user electrocardiograph, ECG, signal from sensors to authenticate a user. In another aspect, enrolment is described. An authentication device is coupled (preferably wirelessly) to a host device to receive power (preferably wirelessly) from the host device. At least one sensor is presented to a skin surface from which an ECG measurement can be taken and stored. Other aspects provide a biometric authentication and/or identification device for a mobile telephone or other device or apparatus. The device includes a biometric sensor, a wireless transmitter and a controller.
