The present invention relates to a medical delivery device for advancing a piston in a drug container for discharging medicine. The support structure supports the vessel and a drive assembly for advancing the piston. The drive assembly includes a drive ribbon that can be retracted and extended. Retracted ribbons form a strand, and extended ribbons form a strand. The drive ribbons are incrementally movable between the retracted wedge configuration and the extended spiral configuration. A mechanical drive rotates the drive ribbon to selectively extend and retract the ribbon. The thrust member with the helical inclined portion engages with the proximal edge of the drive ribbon in which the drive ribbon transitions between the wedge and the helix.
