A method for promoting normal intestinal development in an infant suffering from celiac disease, comprising the step of administering to the infant a nutritional composition comprising a protein component comprising a highly hydrolyzed protein and at least one probiotic, wherein at least one probiotic contains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG.2 . The method of claim 1, wherein the nutritional composition further comprises at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid comprises docosahexaenoic acid. The method of claim 2, wherein the at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid comprises docosahexaenoic acid and arachidonic acid. The method of claim 1, wherein the nutritional composition further comprises at least one prebiotic. The method of claim 1, wherein the protein component consists essentially of a highly hydrolyzed protein. A method for alleviating the symptoms of celiac disease in a subject, comprising the step of administering to the subject a nutritional composition comprising an effective amount of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the nutritional composition further comprises at least one long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. The method of claim 8, wherein the nutritional composition comprises docosahexaenoic acid. The method of claim 8, wherein the nutritional composition comprises arachidonic acid.
