A multi-layer vertical growth storage tower 15a comprises two stacks of growth tray units 1 wherein the underside of each unit accommodates a lighting source, the stacks are on either side of a central lift mechanism 18, the growth trays being mechanically transferred 29 between a lift position and a storage position., the trays being automatically retrievable from the storage position to a management position 16 which is outside the tower, the management position being aligned with a workstation which aligns with at least one opening on the outside of the tower for access to the growth trays. The light sources may be LEDs. Additionally there may be a system for ventilating, cooling, and control of humidity and CO2 levels.
