A wireless oximeter for continuous use comprises a first device (10) adapted to a patients body part and comprising means for sensing physiological data, in communication with a second, remote device (12) by means of an RF link (11), the first device being powered by a rechargeable battery (31) and being provided with means for saving the battery charge by automatically switching off the power supply to the circuits when the device is not installed in the body of the patient. The second, remote device is an intelligent terminal containing a display and a specific application for processing physiological data captured by the first device and received over the RF link.
