Disclosed is a metallo-�-lactamase inhibitor which can inactivate a �-lactam antibiotic and recover the anti-bacterial activity of the �- lactam antibiotic. A maleic acid derivative having a structure of the general formula (I) has an inhibitory activity against metallo-�- lactamase. The use of the compound (I) in combination with a �-lactam antibiotic enables to recover the anti-bacterial activity of the �-lactam antibiotic against a bacterium capable of producing mettalo-�-lactamase.
