The invention relates to a process for the production of cellulose powder from crop residues, in the following manner, a pretreated raw material is subjected to anaerobic treatment in the presence of microbial consortium, comprising of both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and maintained under anaerobic conditions, wherein the activity of aerobes is limited and anaerobes proliferate depending on the type of supplements, for seven days at room temperature, anaerobically treated material is subjected to kiering and the alkali pretreated raw material then subjected to anaerobic treatment in the presence of microbial consortium for 7 days at room temperature is cooked in 1% alkali at 100°C for 30 min. followed by bleaching. The bleached pulp is hydrolyzed with 2.5 N HCl for 20 min. to get cellulose powder suitable for producing the enzyme cellulase or as a filler material in tablets.
