PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator capable of applying a stronger electric field to an object while suppressing generation of electric discharge between electrodes and the surface of the object, even when a liquid reservoir occurs on the surface of the object during thawing or freezing.SOLUTION: A refrigerator 1 includes: a switching chamber 9 for storing a food 17 which becomes an object for thawing or freezing； a pair of electrodes 15 provided on a wall surface facing the switching chamber 9； a power supply part 18 for applying a voltage between the electrodes 15； and surface state detection means for detecting a surface state of the food 17 in the switching chamber 9.
