A method of inducing an anti-retroviral immune response by counter-acting retro-virus induced anti-apoptosis is disclosed. The present invention relates, at least in part, to agents and methods for treating, inhibiting, vaccinating or controlling HIV. In certain non-limiting aspects, it relates to the reduction of viral load in an HIV-1 infected subject, while simultaneously developing immunological responsiveness within the subject toward HIV-1 that continues after the agent is removed or excreted from the subjects body.
