The invention relates to a phacoemulsification device which allows for bettervacuum control.The device comprises a control unit having a vacuum sensor and/or a flow ratesensor. Thehandpiece of the device is adapted to be placed in an operative relationshipwith an eye for asurgical procedure. Irrigation fluid can be supplied to the handpiece whileapplying a vacuum tothe handpiece to allow aspirating the irrigation fluid from the eye throughthe handpiece. Duringfluid aspiration, a vacuum level and/or flow rate is sensed which correspondsto an occlusion ofthe handpiece and from the sensed vacuum level and/or flow rate, a duration ofthe occlusion isdetermined. In response to the determined duration of occlusion, at least oneof the handpieceparameters is varied.
