An endoscope according to an embodiment of the present invention is provided with: an insertion section formed in an elongated shape a mesh-like tube which is formed by weaving fine wires into a tube-like shape and which is provided cylindrically within the insertion section a coil 22 formed by winding an element wire, the coil 22 being inserted through the insertion section and having a front end and a base end, which are affixed to a structure of the insertion section a wire 24 formed by twisting element wires together, the wire 24 being inserted through the coil 22 and having a front end affixed to the front end of the coil 22 and a hardness change mechanism 20 which pulls the wire 24 toward the base end of the coil 22 to apply a compressive force to the coil 22, thereby adjusting the bending hardness of the insertion section.
