The present invention relates to formulations of astaxanthin derivatives in the form of a solution of the astaxanthin derivative in an organic solvent suitable for nourishments which is selected from oils, fats and waxes and mixtures thereof, having a content of astaxanthin derivative of greater than 2% by weight, based on the total weight of the formulation, wherein the astaxanthin derivative comprises at least 80% by weight, in particular at least 90% by weight, and especially at least 96% by weight of at least one compound of the formula I, wherein the fraction of the all-trans isomer (l-trans), based on the total amount of the compound of the formula I present in the solution, is less than 80%, in particular at most 75% by weight, and especially at most 70% by weight, N in particular in the range from 40% to < 80%, preferably in the range from 45% to 75%, and especially in the range from 50 to 70%. The astaxanthin derivatives are compounds of the following formula I where R is a radical of the formula where # indicates the linkage to the carbonyl group, A is -CH2CH2- or -CH=CH- and Rx is C1-C4 alkyl and also astaxanthin derivatives which comprise at least 80% by weight, in particular at least 90% by weight, and especially at least 96% by weight of the compounds of the formula I.
