A system for detecting flying animals comprising a detection module configured to detect flying objects entering a first detection zone, an analysis module for determining whether a flying object within the first detection zone is an animal and a first deterrent configured to activate following determination that a flying object within the first detection zone is an animal and said animal enters a second detection zone, wherein the second detection zone is closer to a pre-determined reference point than the first detection zone. Audio or visual deterrents may be utilises. A third detection zone even closer to a pre-determined reference point may be used. Further claimed are systems including means to classify flying animals by species, detecting and classifying objects in real time via image analysis and predicting bird and bat flight paths in order to predict collisions. Reduction of bird strike on aircraft and wind turbines is envisaged.
