A hand-held device 10 for measuring the level of pain experienced by a patient which translates the patients qualitative expression of the pain level on a qualitative scale into a quantitative value. The hand-held device 10 of the invention comprises a patients pain scale 70 which includes a three dimensional element so as to allow visually-impaired patients to more easily understand the relative level of pain being indicated by the positioning of a movable indicator 60 on the device.
