A method for providing battery security in a breathing assistance systemconfigured to provide breathing assistanceto a patient is provided. A battery security system of the breathingassistance system receives battery data from a battery receivedin the breathing assistance system, and analyzes the received battery data todetermine whether the battery is approved for use inthe breathing assistance system. If the battery is determined to be approvedfor use in the breathing assistance system, the batteryis allowed to provide power to the breathing assistance system. If the batteryis not determined to be approved for use in thebreathing assistance system, the battery is prevented from providing power tothe breathing assistance system.
