An ablation system includes an ablation catheter (200) having an ablation tip (202). In addition, the system includes a locating system (204) which is operative with catheter (200), so as to provide a location of at least ablation tip (202) in space. The system further includes a mechanism for monitoring a location of ablation tip (202) in space when ablation is applied thereby, and for either reporting an operator or automatically terminating an ablation when a location of ablation tip (202) spatially deviates beyond a predetermined threshold from a desired location.
