A method of enhancing the health of the gastrointestinal tract of an animal in need thereof, wherein the method comprises administering to said animal a composition containing an effective amount of lactic acid, wherein strengthening includes reducing the level in the gastrointestinal tract of at least one genus or species of harmful bacteria, where the genus harmful bacteria selected from Enterococcus and Desulfovibrio, or where the type of harmful bacteria is selected from the group consisting of Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, Clostridium difficile, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, Bacillus cereus, listeria moniteriseris colitica, Campylobacter jejuni, Shigella spp. 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of lactic acid is from about 0.01% to about 10% by weight of the composition. The method according to claim 1 or 2, where the specified animal is diagnosed that it suffers, or diagnosed that it is susceptible to a condition associated with poor health of the gastrointestinal tract. The method of claim 3, wherein the condition includes diarrhea. The method of claim 3, wherein the condition comprises irritable bowel syndrome. The method of claim 3, wherein the condition includes impaired absorption of nutrients. The method of claim 1, wherein the animal is a dog or cat. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition further comprises an effective amount of an ingredient selected from the group consisting of probiotics, prebiotics, symbiotics, bacterial exopolysaccharides, and combinations thereof. The method according to claim 1, wherein the composition is a food composition with a complete nutrient content for domestic animals.
