The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for measuring structural features of objects. Objects undergo an energy application process to provide objective, quantitative measurements of their structural characteristics. The system may comprise a device, for example a percussion instrument, which may be reproducibly arranged for an object making such a measurement for reproducible positioning. The system does not include an external on / off switch or any remote on / off switching mechanism. The system also includes disposable features or assemblies to minimize cross contamination during testing.
