The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing porous silica particles comprising at least one bioactive compound, whereby the particles are adapted for lung, nasal, sublingual and/or pharyngeal delivery of said at least one bioactive compound and have an MMAD between 0.5 and 15 µm with a GSD less than 2.5. The invention also relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising said silica particles and a use of the silica particles in the diagnoses, prevention and/or treatment of local and/or systemic disorders, such as disorders of the lung, nose, sublingual and/or pharynx.
