An electronic smoking device comprising a housing 2； a receiving unit 3 for receiving solid smoking material suitable for aerosol generation； a primary heating element 5 arranged adjacent to the receiving unit and configured to liquefy and then atomize the solid smoking material； a positioning element 6 for forcing solid smoking material inserted in the receiving unit towards the primary heating element, wherein the receiving unit, primary heating element and positioning element are arranged within the housing. The receiving unit preferably has a hollow body 7 with an open end 8, and more preferably there may be a porous element with an opening facing the open end of the hollow body. The porous element may be the shape of a nozzle or a cone. The positioning element is preferably a spring, which may be attached to the receiving unit and adapted to force the solid material towards the open end of the hollow body. The electronic smoking device may further comprise a secondary heating element to pre-heat the solid smoking material within the receiving unit. The secondary heating element may comprise a thermal conductor element or an electrically heatable device adjacent to the receiving unit.
