A tooth whitening composition comprises a peroxide such as hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, calcium peroxide, tetrasodium pyrophosphate peroxide or sodium per carbonate and an abrasive having an iron content of less than 50 ppm such as calcium carbonate, aluminum hydroxide, calcium hydrogen phosphate, calcium pyrophosphate or insoluble sodium metaphosphate.
