To optimize the direction of electronic scanning by automatically recognizing the direction of a hand holding a probe in an ultrasonic diagnosis.

SOLUTION: The probe 10 is provided with a contact detector 18 at the exterior of its case 16. The contact detector 18 is a planar sensor outputting a two-dimensional image indicating a contact region of the hand 36. The respective processes of a connection process, a line-thinning process, an end specification process and a thumb specification process are performed with respect to the two-dimensional image to recognize a position indicating the thumb and the direction of the thumb and thereby determining the thumb traveling direction as holding direction information. The electronic scanning direction ON an array vibrator is automatically determined based thereon.
