The use according to claim 1, wherein the compound is in the form of 2-amino-2- [2- (4-octylphenyl) ethyl] propap-1,3-diol hydrochloride. A method for treating multiple sclerosis in a patient in need of such treatment, comprising administering to a patient a daily dose of 0.5 mg of a compound that is 2-amino-2- [2- (4-octylphenyl) ethyl] propap-1,3-diol ( FTY720) in free form or in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. 4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the compound is in the form of 2-amino-2- [2- (4-octylphenyl) ethyl] propap-1,3-diol hydrochloride. The use of a compound which is 2-amino-2- [2- (4-octylphenyl) ethyl] propap-1,3-diol (FTY720) in free form or in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of autoimmune disease in a patient in need thereof, said treatment comprising administering a daily dose of 0.5 mg. 6. The use of claim 5, wherein the compound is in the form of 2-amino-2- [2- (4-octylphenyl) ethyl] propap-1,3-diol hydrochloride.
