A system and method are disclosed for stimulating activation of heat shockproteins and facilitatingprotein repair in cells and tissues in order to take advantage of theremediative and restorative natureof the increased heat shock protein activation or production and thefacilitation of protein repair, whilenot damaging the cells and tissues. This is accomplished by treating aspecified target area with anultrasound or electromagnetic radiation source which is pulsed and applied orfocused to one or moresmall areas in order to achieve the necessary temperature rise or sufficientlystress the cells and tissueto stimulate heat shock protein production or activation and facilitateprotein repair, while allowingthe temperature to decay sufficiently quickly so as not to damage or destroythe treated tissue.
