A surgical access assembly (10) for use during the course of a minimally invasive procedure includes a housing (12), a seal member (100), an elongate access member (14) and a pump assembly (200) to selectively communicate to and from the seal member (100) such that the seal may transition from a first condition to at least one subsequent condition. In the first condition, the seal member is configured to allow a surgical object to pass therethrough with little resistance, and in the at least one subsequent condition, the seal member is inflated so that it forms a substantially fluid tight seal with the surgical object. The pump assembly can comprise a pressure transducer (228), a sensor (234) for identifying the instruments and a processing unit (212). The seal member (100) can comprise one or more bladders (110).
