Disclosed is an isolated monoclonal antibody, or an antigen binding fragment thereof, comprising (i) a heavy chain CDR1 having the sequence of SEQ ID NO:1, a heavy chain CDR2 selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 2 and 119； and a heavy chain CDR3 sequence of SEQ ID NO:3； and (ii) a light chain CDR1 having the sequence of SEQ ID NO:4； a light chain CDR2 having the sequence of SEQ ID NO:5； and a light chain CDR3 sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NOs: 6 and 120, wherein said antibody binds to human C5 protein. Also disclosed is use of the antibody or antigen binding fragment thereof in the manufacture of a medicament for treating age related macular degeneration asthma, arthritis, autoimmune heart disease, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemia-reperfusion injuries, Barraquer-Simons Syndrome, hemodialysis, systemic lupus, lupus erythematosus, psoriasis, transplantation, Alzheimer's disease, glomerulonephritis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) or MPGN II.
