PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a spherical active carbon having 0.25 mL/g or more volume of pores of pore diameters of 7.5-15,000 nm, a refractive intensity ratio (R value) of below 1.4, a total acid group content of 0.16 meq/g or more, and good adsorbent performance by subjecting a thermoset spherical phenolic resin as a raw material to carbonization and activation.
SOLUTION: A spherical phenolic resin obtained by mixing a phenol and an aldehyde with water in the presence of an emulsification dispersant and an aminic reaction catalyst in a heating agitation kettle, emulsifying and dispersing them under agitation, and thermally condensing them under pressure from atmospheric pressure to a low pressure of below 1.3 kg/cm
2 has a marked tendency to generate gas due to the thermal decomposition of the resin during the carbonization and can therefore be carbonized while retaining its spherical form. It has been found out that this can give a spherical active carbon which has a 0.25 mL/g or more volume of pores of pore diameters of 7.5-15,000 nm attained thereby, a low content of impurities such as heavy metals in virtue of more frequent chances of being washed, suppressed blocking in virtue of no thermal fusion among concomitant fine particles or spherical particles during the carbonization, a refraction intensity ratio (R value) of below 1.4, and a total acidic group content of 0.16 meq/g or more.COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
