The invention relates to apparatus for use in the application of liquid onto a body of matter to provide a watering effect and hence maintain the condition of the body of matter so as to encourage plant growth. The system includes a liquid reservoir (7), and a pump means and irrigation means (12) so as to allow liquid to be moved from the reservoir (7) and be dispensed onto the body of matter. In one embodiment the power for operation of the pump is at least partially provided from a solar panel (34). The operation of the system to dispense liquid can be proportional to at least one environmental component such as the amount of sunlight such that when the body of matter is likely to be drier the system is operated to dispense more liquid.
